Investigating the use of Carbon based molecules as fuels.
This internal is a mixture of teacher led study and students research.
You will look at the first 8 alkanes and first two alcohols, comparing their physical and chemical properties. This will include their reaction with oxygen (combustion).
These carbon based molecules are used as fuels in a variety of different combinations and for a variety of uses, depending on their reactivity, energy produced per gram and also ease of transport and storage.
Once you have some data on these molecules YOU will be required to investigate and present information on the following:
You can present your findings in a variety of formats: written report / PowerPoint presentation (with oral component) / Oral presentation / poster. It's your choice, but it must cover the points above.
As an idea on what level the work must be at to get Achieved, Merit and Excellence, read paragraphs 3, 4 and 5 on page 2 of the Achievement Standard below.
AS90945 - Investigate implications of the use of carbon compounds as fuels
The task below is still generic and needs to be individualised for our class. You will have until the Wednesday of week 5 (August 15th) to complete the work.

Once you have some data on these molecules YOU will be required to investigate and present information on the following:
- The properties of the different molecules.
- The efficiency of these molecules as fuels.
- The effect that using these molecules as fuels has on the wider environment / biosphere. This can be, but is not limited to air or thermal pollution, effect on global climate, ocean acidification, depletion of non-renewable resources or the use of food crops as fuels.
